Expansion of the OS X base

AAPL

Take a moment and think about the expansion of Apple’s OSX base. I mean, every new iPhone customer is a new OSX user. And every Application Developer is an OSX developer. And as is typical in the development community, if you write for one device, you write for all devices running OSX.

We all know that Apple was marginalized when it lost it’s development community in the late 1990’s. And we are seeing an explosion of developers now with the advent of iphone 2.0 software. This fact, more than any other fact is why the Mac platform has traction and will grow every day. As someone once said, it is the software that runs on that gorgeous apple hardware.

But while I was thinking about the obstacles I had to overcome in switching back to Apple once I became convinced that OSX was superior to Windows, I realized that Apple has just done away with most of those roadblocks.

It was the conversion of my contacts and calendars from Outlook that was pretty difficult. Also, migration of email was just about impossible. Finding software to replace windows software has gotten easier with every passing day. And for me at least, some of my critical applications run better in OSX than they ever did in Windows.

So, now that the iPhone syncs with Exchange, it is a no brainer to convert calendars, contacts and email from Outlook. Microsoft may live to regret licensing this to Apple.
